As many of you have probably noticed, I have been placing quotes from things I have read on my main webpage. Since I started doing this, I have heard from some who seem to enjoy this. I started out doing it weekly, but now I am doing it monthly. Since starting the blog, I thought it might be interesting to write a bit about the quote of the month. So here is October's quote, along with some comments from me.
"Which system of teaching is likely to influence these students in the long run - 45 minutes of Sunday Schools and youth groups, or 30 hours in public schools?"
-Sheila Richardson, Answers Magazine (vol 2 no 3)
I hope the above quote makes you think a bit. As I read it in my July-Sept 2007 issue of Answers Magazine, it sure made me think.. The public school system is where most of today's youth (including many from Christian homes) spend most of their time. Many parents have the mistaken idea that sending (or even taking) their kids to Sunday School once per week will give their kids enough ammunition to take care of the five days per week that their kids spend in public school. However, this just is not true!
No matter how good the Sunday School teacher is....no matter how sound the church is...No matter how sincere the pastor is....they cannot do enough in one or even two or three services to battle the brainwashing kids go through in the public school systems! Kids today are bombarded with atheistic evolution, sex ed, etc. They are being told that abortion (the killing of unborn babies) is OK, homosexuality (sodomy) is natural, premarital sex is good, that it is OK to question the authority of parents, etc. And America's children (including Christian youth) are being indoctrinated into this godless way of thinking! No wonder so many of today's churches have few young people who are active members.
The answer? The parents of these children!
If possible, consider homeschooling as a great alternative to the public school system. It is a fantastic way to make sure your children get taught from a Biblical perspective. There are vast amounts of resources and materials available to make it easier than ever to homeschool, and most state laws are in our favor (at least here in the USA).
If it is not possible to homeschool, then spend as much time with your children teaching them the truth. Make sure you are aware of what they are being taught. Take a look at their books. Find out what those books say about science. Read the stories they are reading. When they come home from public school, discuss with them the things they are learning, and then teach them what the Bible says. Know how to defend the faith!
Whatever you do, parents of all children need to make sure to "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." (Proverbs 22:6). Whether you spend all day with them by homeschooling them or if you only spend a few hours with them, make sure you train them in the way they should go.
Make the Word of God a constant part of your life. As you live day to day, you will have a better influence on the children. "And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates." (Deuteronomy 6:6-9).
May the Lord help us to be a stronger influence on our children!
