“The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments.” (II Timothy 4:13). Books are important to any student of the Word of God, but especially to the preacher. Our calling is special and very serious. We are told to “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (II Timothy 2:15).
A preacher ought to have some books! No doubt about that! However, the books we use can either help us or harm us, so I have compiled a list of some books that every sound preacher ought to have in his library. This is by no means a complete list. As of November 2019 I have in my personal library nearly 2600 books and booklets, not counting ebooks. This list is a collection of some of my favorites. I'll update these lists as time permits.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please drop me an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. Keep in mind that not all authors are equal and you'll find points you disagree with in any book. But there is a Book by which all others must be judged. That book is the Bible and may we always be like the Bereans of old who "...were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." (Acts 17:11) As Charles Spurgeon put it, “Visit many good books, but live in the Bible.”
